Game Modes Decoded: Choose Your Level of Chaos

From cozy 6-player showdowns to legendary 12-player battles with Guards and Idiots. Here is everything you need to know to pick the right game mode.

Game Modes Decoded: Choose Your Level of Chaos

So you want to play Werewolf. Great choice! But wait — how many people do you have? What difficulty level? Do you want a chill game or are you ready for the full-blown strategic nightmare?

Don’t panic. We break down all six game modes so you can pick the one that matches your group’s energy.

The Six Modes at a Glance

Classic 66BeginnerQuick and tense
Classic 99RecommendedBalanced chaos
Classic 1212StandardFull party mode
Idiot 99AdvancedChaotic twist
Guard 1010AdvancedDefensive strategy
Guard 1212AdvancedMaximum complexity

Classic 6 — “The Quickie”

Difficulty: Beginner
Roles: 2 Werewolves, 2 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Hunter

Six players. Two wolves. This is the game mode for when you have just enough friends to play but not enough to wait around.

It’s fast. There’s barely time to form a real alliance before someone gets voted out. The Seer has huge pressure — every reveal matters. The Hunter is basically a ticking time bomb waiting to go off.

Perfect for: First-timers, short attention spans, people who say “just one more game.”

Pro tip: In Classic 6, the win condition is “Parity” — wolves win if they have as many players alive as the village. This means one wrong vote can end everything.

Villager

No powers — only persuasion and deduction.

Classic 9 — “The Sweet Spot”

Difficulty: Recommended
Roles: 3 Werewolves, 3 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Witch, 1 Hunter

This is the mode we recommend to everyone. Nine players, five special roles, and enough chaos to keep things interesting for hours.

The Witch adds a whole new layer of drama. Will they save the Seer? Poison the loudest player? Stay quiet and save both potions for a dramatic last stand?

Perfect for: Regular game nights, groups who know the basics, people who like strategy mixed with social deduction.

Fun fact: Classic 9 uses “Side Kill” — one team wins when the other is completely eliminated. No math tricks, just pure destruction. Classic 6 is the only mode that uses “Parity” instead (wolves win when they equal or outnumber the village).

One heal and one poison per game.

Classic 12 — “The Party”

Difficulty: Standard
Roles: 4 Werewolves, 4 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Witch, 2 Hunters

Twelve players. Four wolves. Two Hunters ready to take someone down with them. This is where things get loud.

More players means more voices, more confusion, and more hiding spots for the wolves. The village has more firepower (two Hunters!), but the wolves have better cover.

Perfect for: Big groups, parties, people who want the “full Werewolf experience.”

Warning: Discussions can get long. Very long. Someone will inevitably go on a tangent about their conspiracy theory. This is normal.

Idiot 9 — “The Meme Mode”

Difficulty: Advanced
Roles: 3 Werewolves, 2 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Witch, 1 Hunter, 1 Idiot

Now things get interesting.

The Idiot is the village’s wild card. When voted out, they flip their identity card, announce “I’m the Idiot, actually,” and… stay in the game. But here’s the catch: they lose their speaking and voting rights for the rest of the game.

So if you’re the Idiot and you get voted out, congratulations! You survived! Also you can never talk again. Good luck with that.

Idiot
Villager

Idiot

Survive being voted out — but lose your voice and vote forever.

Why would you want this? Because sometimes the village accidentally votes out a perfectly good villager, and the Idiot is like “Haha, got you, I’m actually useful!”

Perfect for: Groups who want comedy mixed with strategy, players who enjoy chaotic role dynamics.

Strategic note: As the Idiot, your best move is to claim Seer early. If they vote you out, you reveal for free and the real Seer is protected. Or don’t. Just sit there. You can’t talk anyway.

Guard 10 — “Defensive Mode”

Difficulty: Advanced
Roles: 3 Werewolves, 3 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Witch, 1 Hunter, 1 Guard

Introducing the Guard! This mysterious defender can protect one player each night from the wolves’ attack. The catch? You can’t protect the same person two nights in a row.

The night order is: Wolves attack → Guard protects → Witch acts

So the Guard can save someone even after the wolves strike. But the wolves can bait the Guard by attacking someone predictable one night, then hitting their real target when the Guard is busy protecting someone else.

Guard
Villager

Guard

Protect one player from wolf attacks — not the same person twice in a row.

Perfect for: Strategists who love defensive play, groups that want more team coordination.

Pro tip: As Guard, if someone claims to be the Seer and you believe them, protect them. The wolves will definitely try to kill the real Seer.

Guard 12 — “The Ultimate Battle”

Difficulty: Advanced
Roles: 4 Werewolves, 3 Villagers, 1 Seer, 1 Witch, 1 Hunter, 1 Idiot, 1 Guard

This is it. The final form. Seven different roles, twelve players, four wolves, and every mechanic in the game is active.

You’ve got the Guard protecting people, the Idiot surviving votes and going silent, the Witch brewing potions, the Seer divining truths, and the Hunter with their finger on the trigger.

Perfect for: Veteran players, competitive groups, people who want to prove they’re the ultimate Werewolf master.

Reality check: Games can take 45+ minutes. Make sure everyone has snacks.

Which Mode Should You Play?

New to Werewolf? Start with Classic 6 or Classic 9.

Know the basics? Classic 9 gives you the full experience with all standard roles.

Want a challenge? Try Idiot 9 for some chaotic fun or Guard 10 for defensive strategy.

Ready for war? Guard 12 is the ultimate test of your Werewolf skills.
